Betting Shops

Local authorities (as Licensing authorities) issue Premises Licences under the Gambling Act for these venues. Applicants must also hold an Operators Licence issued by the Gambling Commission.

Bingo Premises

Local authorities (as Licensing authorities) issue Premises Licences under the Gambling Act for these venues where bingo is played in a commercial premises. Applicants must also hold an Operators Licence issued by the Gambling Commission.

Organisations, including charities, may provide bingo on a small scale without having a licence providing they operate under the terms of the legal exemption. The threshold is reached if the bingo played during any seven-day period exceeds £2,000 (either in money taken or prizes awarded) once in a year, referred to as 'high turnover bingo'. Bingo can also be played under this low level exemption in pubs and clubs under the relevant alcohol premises licence without a Gambling Act Licence being required.

Casino Premises

Local authorities (as Licensing authorities) issue Premises Licences under the Gambling Act for these venues where a range of gambling activities may be played in a commercial premises. Applicants must also hold an Operators Licence issued by the Gambling Commission. Under the Gambling Act 2005 new casino licences ( for small or large venues) may only be granted in certain geographical areas and East Herts is not one of those areas.
