Community lottery is just the ticket

More than 60 groups ranging from sports to social clubs have been discovering that the East Herts Community Lottery is a winner for them.

Thanks to tickets purchased by their friends and supporters, more than £8,000 has been raised by this East Herts initiative since it launched at the start of the year for a variety of good causes.

Of the £1 ticket cost, 50p goes straight to the charity chosen by the purchaser while 10p is added to a community pot for local groups.

Sea cadets

Patricia Doherty, fundraising trustee for Hertford and Ware Sea Cadets, said: "The lottery has proved to be an excellent way for us to raise funds to help us continue to hold activities and cover the running costs of the unit.

"We have a lot of underprivileged children who attend and can't always afford our activities. We don't want them to miss out so we also help fund them and the lottery has been a big help.

"Our parents are a great support to us too. I'd recommend any local community group to think about signing up."

Income stream

Suzanne Rutland-Barsby, executive member for communities, said: "An impressive range of community and voluntary groups have signed up to the lottery which provides them with a steady stream of income, thanks to members and friends who buy tickets.

"It's a great way for everybody to support their favourite local group. All you have to do is buy a ticket, select your good cause at no extra cost to yourself and as a bonus, you'll be in with a chance of winning a cash prize or free bonus tickets for yourself."
