East Herts prepares Groundwork for new play area

East Herts Council (EHDC) has awarded the contract for the redevelopment of Hartham play area to community charity Groundwork East.

The aim of this redevelopment is to improve the variety of types of play as well as the age range the play area attracts. The council is hoping to achieve a play area that blends into the natural woodland and will include outdoor seating and picnic areas for fun, family days out.

Alice Miall, Landscape Architect for Groundworksaid: "We are looking forward to transforming Hartham Common's play area into an innovative and enticing space that inspires outdoor play for young children, whilst also providing a hub for the local community."

The consultation and design process will take a year and, subject to planning permission, the build is scheduled to start spring/summer 2020.

East Herts Council is working with the Hertford Playground Alliance (HPA) to help increase funds for the redevelopment of the park through a crowd funding initiative.

Jodi Bayliss and Carolyn Groombridge from the HPA said: "We are excited to collaborate with Groundwork, EHDC and local residents to help develop an innovative and imaginative new play area in Hertford.  We are thrilled that the project has been awarded to a local company who are passionate about natural design and community involvement."

Eric Buckmaster, executive member for wellbeing, East Herts Council, said:

"We are looking forward to starting work on the redevelopment of the Hartham play area with Groundwork.  This is a much loved and well used play area in Hertford and with these new plans; we hope more families will be able to enjoy this space.

"It is also fantastic to be working together with the HPA to explore crowd funding in order to provide an even better play area that everyone can be proud of."
