Plastic Free Picnic Tips

This page gives information on how to reduce single use plastic when enjoying a picnic with family and friends

Are you planning a family picnic or a get together with friends?
We all need to play our small part to reduce single plastic use, so we have put together some little tips that might help when planning picnics this summer.

Cutlery, plates and glasses/cups:

  • Take your own from home.
  • If you don’t want to take your own, consider investing in a reusable picnic set.  Most come in their own little bag with a cool bag attached, making it easy to transport food, and pack away at the end.

Drinks:

  • Take your own water in a reusable bottle.
  • Consider cans or glass instead of plastic bottles; and if you have a carbonating device, make your own fizzy drinks at home.

Food:

  • Use reusable containers, or beeswax wraps, instead of single use plastic bags to keep your food items separate.
  • Why not make your own biscuits, cakes and other sweet treats to avoid the single use plastic most shop bought items are sold in.
  • Select fruit and veg from the loose section in the supermarket and take your own bag instead of purchasing them packaged in plastic.

Refill Shops:

  • Are there any refill shops nearby you can visit to get your picnic selections.

Just think!  If everyone takes these simple steps with their picnics this summer – how much single plastic use will be saved?  It is the little things that can go a long way to make a big difference.
