These were led by the team at Breathe Clean, East Herts Council’s clean air initiative which aims to highlight things we can do to protect ourselves from air pollution while reducing our personal contribution to the issue.
In addition to taking part in hands-on workshops, eight Y3s were given the chance to get involved in making a film about air quality which will be shared with parents and the wider community.
Councillor Alex Daar, East Herts Executive Member for Communities, joined the youngsters on the shoot, and said: “It’s great to see primary school children gaining an early awareness of air quality as an important environmental issue. Improving air quality across East Herts is a key priority for the council over the next four years.”
Mrs West, Headteacher at High Wych Primary School, said: “Getting involved in Breathe Clean has really improved our children’s understanding of the causes of air pollution. Youngsters are particularly at risk from air pollution as their immune systems, lungs and brains are still developing.”
The Breathe Clean project will run across East Herts until June 2024. In addition to workshops and film-making, there will be an inter-school competition and opportunities for schools to get involved in outdoor classroom days, car free days, walk-to-school weeks and scientific experiments to measure air quality.
The project will also work with businesses, focusing on how workplaces can encourage greater use of public transport and higher levels of walking and cycling to work. Community groups will also be involved, with the Breathe Clean team helping them raise awareness of air pollution through their own networks and neighbourhoods, and set up sustainability events.
Schools, businesses and community groups which are interested in taking part in the Breathe Clean project should get in touch with the specialist organisation, MP Smarter Travel, who are running the programme with the council, by emailing info@mpsmartertravel.co.uk
