Leventhorpe Pool in Sawbridgeworth and Fanshawe Pool and Gym in Ware are due to close from Monday, 23 December 2024.

East Herts Council, Chauncy School, Leventhorpe School, Hertfordshire County Council and Everyone Active have issued the following joint statement explaining the reasons behind this decision:

It is with regret to inform you that following the Government’s decision to withdraw funding support for the running of Leventhorpe Pool in Sawbridgeworth and Fanshawe Pool and Gym in Ware, these facilities are now due to close from Monday 23 December 2024.

The sites are owned by the respective schools and are currently managed by Everyone Active on behalf of East Herts Council.

Despite all parties’ hard work to keep the centres open including lobbying with the local MP, the closure has become inevitable due to the lack of central government funding, associated operating and ongoing maintenance costs, as well as the viability of the sites. Should significant funding become available, all parties are willing to revisit this position.

All current Everyone Active members at both sites will be contacted, as well as local schools and clubs that use the facilities. We understand how important and beneficial physical activity is for all aspects of health and will endeavour to work with our partners to ensure, where possible, the provision from both facilities can be moved to alternative locations including Grange Paddocks and Hartham leisure centres.

In addition, information about other local facilities can be found here.

All staff at both facilities will be offered redeployment opportunities where practical.
