East Herts Council will introduce revised parking fees across its surface and multi-storey car parks from Monday, 7 April.

The updated tariffs, approved by the council’s Executive in February, aim to create a more consistent pricing structure across the district while promoting sustainable travel for shorter journeys. Charges have been simplified based on location and car park type, ensuring a fairer and more logical approach.

In the larger towns of Bishop’s Stortford, Hertford, and Ware, parking fees will start at £1.20 for the first hour, increasing progressively for longer stays based on a consistent formula applied from the base rate. In smaller towns, the base rate will be 70p for an hour.

As part of this revision, some charges will be reduced, including lower all-day parking rates in Sawbridgeworth and cheaper short-stay parking in Stanstead Abbotts. Additionally, all prices at Northgate End in Bishop’s Stortford will remain frozen to encourage better use of this facility.

Free parking periods will continue in locations where they are already in place.

Councillor Tim Hoskin, Executive Member for Environmental Sustainability, said: “This marks the beginning of a simpler, more consistent parking tariff structure for East Herts.

“We know that any increase in charges can be difficult, especially when many residents are already feeling financial pressure. While our rates remain competitive with surrounding areas, we’ve had to make tough budget decisions, and increasing parking fees is one of the few ways we can raise income to keep essential services running. Where possible, we encourage people to walk or cycle into town, helping to save money while also supporting a healthier and greener community.”

Signs have been put up in all the car parks to inform people of the changes. See the full breakdown of the new parking charges by town and car park.
